Publishing activity of the Ukrainian emigration in Warszawa and other cities of the Second Polish Republic in the interwar period

The article examines two periods of publishing activity of the Ukrainian emigration in Poland in 1920–1930: first (1920–1924) – the period of internment camps for Ukrainian soldiers in Poland, and second (1924–1939) – the period of civilian emigration. The material and financial, social and cultural conditions of publishing houses, editorial offices and printing houses in the camps in such cities as Kalisz, Piotrków Trybunalski, Lancut, etc. are described. The main publishing centres of the Ukrainian press and book publishing, such as Warszawa, Lviv, Kraków, and others, are noted. Ukrainian political, cultural, scientific, and educational organisations and institutions operated in these centres. One of the main centres of Ukrainian book publishing in Poland was the Ukrainian Scientific Institute, which operated in Warszawa and was engaged in preparing, translating, and printing scientific works, literary fiction, textbooks, and other book products. The work also analyses the most famous magazines published in the camps of Ukrainian interned soldiers and later by civilian emigrants. The author summarises the main content, conditions, and cultural and historical significance of the Ukrainian press and book publishing for preserving the national identity of Ukrainians in emigration.
