The article presents international and Slovak works concerning definition and promotion of consistent palaeographic terminology, which should enable description and analysis of Latin script – from books, documents and epigraphy – from ancient until modern times. Accordingly, the author describes international works on that, including initiatives of the International Committee of Latin Palaeography (Comité international de paléographie latine – CIPL), as well as Czech and Slovak efforts in this area. The following two parts of the article discuss fundamental palaeographic terminology (styles, kinds and types of Latin scripts) and criteria of analysis of historical texts. It should be emphasised that fragment concerning terminology is accompanied with adequate, clear illustrations, what facilitates understanding the text.
