Abstract

The article concerns the problem of the manuscripts in the Polish province of the Franciscans Observants - known as the Bernardines - from the moment of taking the first Stradom foundation in 1453 until the half of the 16th century. Quite a large group of manuscripts has survived from that time, maintained in the Bernardines' collections, or dispersed among libraries and state or church archives. The largest is the set consisting of the so-called library manuscripts, stored in the Library of the Bernardines Province in Cracow. Moreover, the provincial archive indicates a few manuscript codices in its printed catalogue of the collection, which concern the book researchers. The time indicated has only been exceeded in regards to liturgical manuscripts. The author, referring to his research on the old book culture in the Bernardines community, defined characteristic features of the Bernardines manuscript culture during the time of invention and dissemination of the technique of typing with movable types.
