Abstract

The article consists of statements of the Polish book scientists, concerning the edition of the sources to the history of the book and its social influence. It is difficult to conduct and develop bibliological research without access to source materials, ultimately finalised in the future with a synthesis of the history of the Polish book. The sources are more and more dispersed and decreased, due to natural destruction, theft, different organisational transformations (relocation or redistribution of sets). The following researchers presented their considerations concerning the need of large-scale archival, library and museum inquiries and editions of sources to the history of the book and libraries: Barbara Bieńkowska, Halina Chamerska, Radosław Cybulski, Henryk Holender, Zbigniew Mikołejko, Edward Potkowski, Jan Rogala, Elżbieta Słodkowska, Kazimierz Warda, Józef Wojakowski. Their remarks concerned formal (e.g. sources of funding of the works, the establishment of the teams, forms of presenting the results) and substantive (e.g. methodology of document description, their typology, and chronology of publication of source materials) issues.
