Abstract

The article presents and discusses the contents of the document of 1781, issued by major Franciszek Józef Jerowski (1734 – after 1795), a quartermaster in the Corps of Cadets in Warsaw. His order was addressed to junior officers and imposed on them an obligation of reading indicated 28 works, to extend their knowledge and promote their content among the students. Only 4 of the 28 recommended books were in Polish, the rest 24 – in French. According to the order, two hours per an ordinary day or Sunday and 1 hour per holidays were indicated for reading. Such a schedule offered good conditions for regularity in this self-education process. The original document is stored in the Polish Library in Paris, in the collection of material up to Stanisław August times.
