Abstract

The author describes education and promotion of the bishops in the Republic of Poland in the 16th century. This group, its career and education, is particularly interesting, because receiving the episcopal distinction was equal to joining the Senate. In the 16th century the nobility started to appreciate the role of education. Nobility children were educated in Poland and abroad. Future bishops were recruited from among them. The article lists Polish and foreign universities where the future bishops studied, courses they attended, their scientific careers, as well as the role of court’s education. The author concludes that almost all clergy senators in the 16th century were educated.
