Abstract

The Author starts with a short history of the Stanisław Konarski High School No 1 in Rzeszów, one of the oldest high schools in Poland, established in 1658 as the Piarists’ college (Collegium Ressoviense). Next, referring to the school documents preserved in the Regional State Archive in Rzeszów, and the school reports for the years 1851-1958 maintained in the Rzeszów Higher Pedagogical School Library, she presents: history of the school library, its activities and functions: gathering, sharing, and development of the book collection in the years 1658-1965. Concluding, the author claims that the article does not provide a complete history of the Library or its book collection, due to lack of archival materials concerning the Piarists’ period, and dispersion of its collection in the year 1965. In the result of the latter 144 old prints (among other objects) were found in the Higher Pedagogical School Library. However, it does not discredit validity of the opinions of that researchers who listed the Library among the largest school libraries in history in Poland, distinctive with either its collection or the readers’ usage indicator.
