Żydowskie biblioteki naukowe powstały jako skutek oświecenia żydowskiego i zrodzonej w jego następstwie judaistyki. Stanowiły one fundament tej dynamicznie rozwijanej przez żydowskich badaczy nowej dziedziny wiedzy. Przedmiotem artykułu jest historia trzech bibliotek niemieckich: jednej we Wrocławiu i dwóch w Berlinie, oraz czterech w II Rzeczypospolitej: jednej w Warszawie, dwóch w Wilnie i jednej w Lublinie. Po przedstawieniu tych naukowych żydowskich książnic od ich założenia po dojście Hitlera do władzy (1933 r.) i – odpowiednio – do wybuchu wojny, autorka opisuje ich losy w latach panowania nazistów. Zamknięte, skonfiskowane, zniszczone, splądrowane, wywiezione, wykorzystywane w perwersyjny sposób – wszystkie siedem przestało istnieć. Tematem kolejnej części artykułu jest powojenny podział ocalałych z tych żydowskich bibliotek woluminów. Artykuł zamykają refleksje dotyczące badania proweniencji ocalonych książek, rozproszonych w zbiorach na kilku kontynentach, jako o sposobie uratowania od zapomnienia bibliotek, z których pochodzą.
